Following trends is an interest of mine I’d never like to admit, but when the trends currently emerging for Fall 2021 seem to effortlessly tie into outfits I’ve already been saving on my Pinterest boards, I feel it’s time to highlight some of the most essential ones.
The Northeastern Old Money Academia Aesthetic
When I began seeing pleated golf skirts, varsity and argyle sweater vests, knits tied around the shoulders, and lots and lots of tweed start to emerge this season, I remembered that super Y2K, Harvard student, rich girl style that I always associated with unattainability as a kid. Well, she’s definitely back, except you don’t need a bunch of horses, a summer house, and tickets to the U.S. Open to achieve the look.
Based on historical men’s and women’s hunting/sportswear and university academia, even one tweed houndstooth blazer can elevate your look. I have an obsession with making things look expensive, even if they (most likely) aren’t, and this trend does the work for me, with a little help from associative psychology.
Chunky Statement Gold Jewelry
When choosing jewelry to compliment an outfit I’ve made, I used to struggle with wondering if I needed to layer more pieces, or if I had on too many. Giant, chunky, gold statement rings and earrings have since taken the spotlight over necklaces and bracelet stacks, which are still in fashion, but I feel like one chunky dộme ring is more minimalist than a stack of dainty bands.
Modest, understated, dainty, ultra-feminine jewelry styles are a part of the chic style motif that I now deem to be boring. Be bold and express yourself!
Textures
As someone who typically only wears neutrals, I was so excited to see all the different fabrics coming into style this season. Wool, cashmere, satin, flannel, (faux) leather and calfskin, “crocodile”, suede, tweed, twill, the list goes on and on, including the favorite chunky cable knit. I’m here for chunky everything. A monochromatic look isn’t so boring with a leather pant, cashmere sweater, and wool coat, is it?
Oversized Everything
Oversized button ups, flannels, puffer coats, and sweater vests are everywhere this season, but if you are someone who is petite and/or curvy like me, you have to be very careful. I encourage you to go to a store in person to play with this trend, and avoid ordering online before you experience a brand’s sizing and silhouettes for yourself. The good news is the trend is inspired by stealing your “boyfriend’s” clothes, but these brands do have you in mind when it comes to cuts, draping, and sizing, so chances are these pieces will fit you better than your man’s.
